Hello, Are You an AI Apprentice?

AI Singapore’s AI Apprenticeship Programme (AIAP) is a unique opportunity for passionate, highly motivated individuals to develop their skills in AI and machine learning and contribute to Singapore’s growing AI ecosystem. The programme is practical by design. It combines technical training in AI/ML and software engineering (MLOps) with real-world projects leading to actual deployment by organizations, plus mentorship from our passionate AI mentors.

So what do we look for in an apprentice? The key traits, skills and qualities are below.

Technical capabilities

First and foremost, we look for a decent foundation in Python programming, AI and machine learning knowledge, and some software engineering experience. GIT is a must! Knowledge of cloud computing, databases, SQL and general software development principles is good to have.

Technical capabilities alone are not enough. We also look for people who are passionate about AI and machine learning and eager to learn and grow in these fields. We want apprentices who are curious, motivated and enthusiastic about the potential of AI, and keen to help transform the Singapore ecosystem.

Self-learning traits

AIAP has no classroom tutorials or lectures. We have many discussions. The programme is self-directed, and we expect our apprentices to take ownership of their learning experience. We look for individuals who are autonomous, resourceful and self-motivated, with a track record of self-directed learning.

We also value individuals who are adaptable and quick to learn. The field of AI evolves rapidly, and our apprentices must keep up with the latest developments and technologies. That means learning new AI or software frameworks and tools quickly, reading state-of-the-art recently published research papers, and applying them to their projects.

Passion and motivation for AI and data

We believe passion and motivation are key drivers of success. We look for apprentices who are genuinely interested in AI and machine learning and motivated to contribute to the field. We want people excited about the potential of AI to transform industries and improve lives, and eager to be part of a community that shares this vision.

We also value intrinsically motivated individuals, people driven by the desire to learn and to achieve personal satisfaction and fulfilment rather than external rewards or recognition. They are willing to put in the time and effort to develop their skills and expertise without expecting immediate gratification.

Collaboration and diversity in AIAP

The AIAP programme is highly collaborative. Apprentices work closely with their peers, mentors and industry partners, so we look for excellent communicators, verbal and written, who can articulate complex ideas in simple terms.

We also value individuals who are open-minded, respectful and empathetic. Diversity and inclusion are essential to a vibrant AI ecosystem, and we seek apprentices who are willing to listen to and learn from others and who are comfortable working in a diverse and inclusive environment.

Problem-solving abilities

Finally, we look for apprentices who are skilled problem-solvers. AI and machine learning are all about solving complex problems. That means breaking them down into manageable parts, identifying patterns and relationships, and developing creative solutions.

We also value individuals who approach problems from different angles and are not afraid to think outside the box. That means identifying unconventional solutions and being willing to experiment and take risks.
